Chesty Puller Quotes

“All right, they’re on our left, they’re on our right, they’re in front of us, they’re behind us…they can’t get away this time.”

“Great. Now we can shoot at those bastards from every direction.”

“We’re surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them”

“Remember, you are the 1st Marines! Not all the Communists in Hell can overrun you!”

“Take me to the Brig. I want to see the real Marines.”

“Alright you bastards, try and shoot me!” (to Korean forces)

“Where do you put the bayonet?” (upon seeing a flamethrower for the first time)

“You don’t hurt ’em if you don’t hit ’em.”

“Hit hard, hit fast, hit often.”

“Retreat! Hell, we’re just attacking in a different direction.”

I served with MGySgt Kenneth Cate who was with (then) Lt. Puller in Haiti. Ken used to tell some hellacious stories. After one that seemed highly exaggerated, he told me (us) that Puller once commented that the particular event didn’t actually take place, but IF it had then that’s how he would’ve handled it.

Whether a Corporal in Haiti, a Lt. Colonel at Guadalcanal, a Colonel at Chosin Reservoir Korea, or a Major General at Camp Lejeune it is an absolute fact that Chesty Puller would have saluted sharply, barked out “Aye, Sir, aye aye,” and stepped out smartly to immediately fulfill any order given him by his Commander-in-Chief. And at every point in his military career, Puller would have been the most respectful, dignified Marine who ever served any President of the United States.

Proud daughter of a US Marine, 1st Div., veteran of Guadalcanal and Okinawa. He remembers Chesty Puller and heartily enjoyed the quotes I printed and shared with him. Lots of war experiences he won’t talk about ever, but lots of things he remembers with great pride. Especially his brothers in arms…
